THE NATIONAL WORLD WAR II MUSEUM CANOPY OF PEACE – DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

1:00 – 4:30 p.m.

The Canopy of Peace will be a 448 feet long, 126 feet wide steel and fiberglass structure that will hover 150 feet above the ground, spanning several completed structures on the National World War II Museum’s Warehouse District campus. Design and construction of this feature included detailed wind tunnel testing to determine loads on the structure and its foundations. Each load condition resulted in separate forces and overturning moments in all three axes. Working in concert with the project structural engineer, pile caps and layouts were analyzed and revised until predicted cap displacements under all potential loading conditions were within project tolerances. Construction of this feature is proving to be equally challenging, as it is being erected within and above the facility while the museum remains open to the public, in a very congested urban setting. The tour will include discussions of the design challenges while reviewing a full scale mockup of the finished canopy and existing buildings, and will conclude with a stop at an observation catwalk where the ongoing construction of this feature can be observed and the construction challenges discussed.

This tour includes admission to the WWII Museum.
